River Nadder
Salisbury & District Angling Club
The Nadder greeted me with a good flow but dirty water. Both were a bit of a shock after the recent conditions on the Edw and Usk. I watched the river and sure enough there were trout out and about their business. Rises in the tail of the pool and shadows in some of the deeper glides told of fish to be caught.
The fish on the Barford St. Martin beat tend to be wild fish, and so there is a range of sizes. Today only youngsters came to hand. They were fooled for the most part by size 20 nymphs, but a few accepted a size 20 Klinkhamer. There was little fly life evident; the odd olive and grannom; and fishing small is often the answer in these conditions.
The reason for the dirty water is a bit of a mystery as there has been so little rain recently. The Nadder is a mixed water, not a pure chalkstream, it flows over other rock types and so picks up its colour.
